Predator-Proof Coop Buying Guide: What Hardware Cloth Actually Means

The majority of chicken coops sold on Amazon use chicken wire — a hexagonal-mesh wire designed for keeping chickens in, not predators out. Raccoons can reach through 1-inch chicken wire to grab hens. Weasels can squeeze through openings as small as 1 inch. A determined dog can tear chicken wire apart in minutes. If a product listing does not explicitly say 'hardware cloth' or 'welded wire mesh' with a specified gauge, assume it uses chicken wire.

Genuine predator-resistant hardware cloth is welded wire mesh with 1/2-inch or smaller openings, minimum 19-gauge wire. The welds should be at every intersection, not just some. Look for galvanized coating to prevent rust. If a listing says 'wire mesh' without specifying gauge and aperture size, request the spec sheet or assume the worst.
